Every desi business in America belongs on a map.
Desi Atlas is charting desi-owned restaurants, grocers, salons, tailors, jewelers, and services — metro by metro. Not a search engine's afterthought. An atlas drawn by the community it serves.
The survey
Metro by metro, in the order the community asks.
| Metro | Known for | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago, IL | Devon Avenue's grocers, tailors, and kabab houses | Charting now |
| Dallas–Fort Worth, TX | Richardson and Irving's restaurant corridors | Charting now |
| New York / New Jersey | Jackson Heights, Edison, and Jersey City | Charting now |
| Houston, TX | Hillcroft's sari shops and sweet houses | Next up |
| Bay Area, CA | Fremont and Sunnyvale's grocery anchors | Next up |
| Atlanta, GA | Decatur and the Buford Highway crossroads | Planned |
| Washington, DC | Northern Virginia's chaat and biryani belt | Planned |
| Detroit, MI | Hamtramck and Canton's family businesses | Planned |
A metro opens to the public when its first fifty businesses are confirmed by owners. Until then, submissions from each metro go into its survey queue. No listing is published without the owner knowing.
Categories
More than restaurants.
Desi businesses run far beyond the dinner table. The atlas charts eight categories from day one, so the tailor gets found as easily as the biryani.
How a listing earns its dot
Drawn from the ground, not scraped from the web.
Anyone can suggest a business. But a dot only lands on the atlas after the owner confirms the basics themselves — what they sell, where they are, and that they want to be listed. That keeps the map current, and it keeps closed shops and wrong addresses off it.
Listing is free for every business. The atlas will later offer optional extras — richer pages, photos, update tools — but the dot itself never costs anything, and placement is never sold.
- Suggested
- A community member or the owner tells us the business exists.
- Confirmed
- The owner verifies the details and chooses their categories.
- Charted
- The dot goes live on its metro map when the metro opens.
- Kept honest
- Owners can update or remove their listing any time. Stale dots get re-checked.
